Centre for Union sub-group to analyse legal text of any Protocol ‘deal’

The Centre for the Union has put together a sub-group to analyse and rapidly respond to any legal text which is published in relation to the ongoing Protocol negotiations between the European Union and UK.

This sub-group will be Chaired by eminent London Barrister James Bogle BL, and will, amongst others, include Ethan Thoburn (Founder and Director) as well as the three Policy Directors of Centre for the Union, former ERG member and MP Ross Thomson (Scotland Director), Matthew Mackinnon (Wales Director) and Jamie Bryson (Northern Ireland).

The group will submit a report to our Parliamentary Chair The Hon. Ian Paisley MP and thereafter it will be published.

As part of this work, an independent opinion will be commissioned from senior counsel on the specific question as to whether any proposed deal restores, and protects, in substance and practice, the Acts of Union and the constitutional guarantee for Northern Ireland (the principle of consent).

The Centre for the Union will not recommend any deal unless it meets the DUP’s seven key tests and the overarching fundamental requirements for Northern Ireland’s integral place in the Union to be respected.

Mr Ethan Thoburn writes: "As part of this work, an independent opinion will be commissioned from senior counsel on the specific question as to whether any proposed deal restores, and protects, in substance and practice, the Acts of Union and the constitutional guarantee for Northern Ireland (the principle of consent).

My reply: Restoring and protecting, '...in substance and practice, the Acts of Union and the constitutional guarantee for Northern Ireland (the principle of consent).' - will be a most positive and welcome step of current…
